Six observable signals of change · Change Score: 60
Customers 5
Demand weakness spread across the industry in August. McDonald's, the burger chain, reported US comparable sales up just 0.8% on August 4. It blamed most of its traffic shortfall on value deals that more than a third of restaurants skipped. Wendy's reported US sales down 7.0% and traffic down 12.5% on August 7. Wingstop cut its full-year outlook on July 29 after a 7.5% sales decline. DSEF, the direct selling industry's research foundation, put 2025 US retail sales at $34.2 billion, down from $34.7 billion the year before. Nu Skin's revenue fell 17.1%. Customers are spending less and picking the brands with the best app deals.
Talent 3
Seller counts keep drifting down. DSEF, the direct selling industry's research foundation, counted 5.2 million direct sellers in 2025, down from 5.4 million in the prior count, with 4.8 million of them part-time. Leadership churn picked up at the franchisors. Wendy's installed a new CEO, Robert Wright, and a new CFO on August 7, and McDonald's named Skye Anderson its US president on August 4. Wingstop, the chicken wing chain, said on July 29 it hired its first Chief AI Officer. New leaders are arriving with orders to fix demand, and a few now own AI directly.
Money 3
Capital moved in big pieces in August, but the direction held. Jersey Mike's, the sandwich chain, raised about $1 billion in an IPO priced July 29, the largest US restaurant IPO in roughly 20 years. Real Brokerage, a technology-first brokerage, closed its $880 million purchase of RE/MAX on August 24, putting a 145,000-agent franchise network inside a software company. Regent agreed on August 24 to buy Avon North America, reuniting Avon's business in North America with its international business for the first time since 2016. Money is chasing proven franchise systems and consolidation, and less of it is chasing technology inside them.
Incentives 3
The FTC said on August 19 it is seeking comment on a proposed enforcement policy on personalized pricing, meaning prices set using a customer's personal data. That touches any franchisor building one pricing engine on loyalty data. The NLRB, the federal labor board, gained a Republican majority on August 17 that is expected to revisit joint-employer rules, a favorable shift for franchisors. The IFA, the franchise trade group, signed a cooperation agreement with its Mexican and Canadian counterparts on August 19, covering more than 1 million establishments. Nothing enacted in August changed franchise or direct selling law.
Culture 4
PM-International, a direct selling company, opened a Direct Sales Center in Astana, Kazakhstan on August 25. Mary Kay China announced a digital-first transformation on August 28. DSEF, the direct selling industry's research foundation, found Hispanic participation in direct selling rose 6% from a year earlier. Commentary in Direct Selling News framed AI as shifting advantage toward human connection, the thing software cannot copy. On the franchise side, Taco Bell said in July that locations using voice AI reported better employee retention as staff focus on hospitality. The industry's story is that AI handles the transaction and people handle the relationship.
Disruption 4
The biggest franchisors moved from pilots to platforms. Yum, the parent of Taco Bell and KFC, told Fortune on August 19 that its people have built more than 400 AI agents through an internal AI Academy. It says its Byte platform has cut stockouts 85%. McDonald's is consolidating its major markets onto one app, one loyalty program, and one pricing engine, Restaurant Technology News reported on August 13. That pools data from nearly 220 million loyalty users. AI reached the franchisee back office too. O&M Restaurant Group, a 23-unit Taco Bell operator, picked Oscar AI, a vendor claiming about $10,000 per store per year in added profit. The tools are moving from demos into the systems that run every store.

What They're Saying vs. Doing
Two companies reported platform-level numbers, and most of the group reported none. McDonald's, the burger chain, said on its August 4 call it has nearly 220 million active loyalty users and more than $40 billion in trailing loyalty sales. It pushed AI detail to its September 23 Investor Day. Yum shared its agent count and stockout figures in a Fortune interview, not on a call. Wendy's August 7 release had no AI mention and promised a turnaround plan next quarter. Restaurant Brands, Jack in the Box, Dutch Bros, Planet Fitness, and Primerica all reported without an AI metric. Talk is turning into numbers at two companies, not across the industry.
Who They're Hiring
AI tools and titles reached new levels of the org chart in August. Wingstop, the chicken wing chain, said on July 29 it hired its first Chief AI Officer. Yum, the parent of Taco Bell and KFC, told Fortune on August 19 it has authorized enterprise ChatGPT licenses for district managers and franchise leaders. O&M Restaurant Group, a 23-unit Taco Bell franchisee, is putting Oscar AI in front of its district leaders and store managers, the vendor said August 31. Elsewhere the hiring was at the top: Wendy's installed a new CEO and CFO. AI is starting to reach the unit level, where this industry's adoption problem has always lived.
Where Capital Is Going
Capital still goes to unit growth, debt paydown, and shareholders. Restaurant Brands, the parent of Burger King, said on August 6 it has spent $194 million of a planned $550 million technology and kitchen fund. It returned $435 million to shareholders in the quarter. Dutch Bros, the drive-thru coffee chain, guided 2026 capital spending to $350 to $370 million, with at least 185 new shops planned. Wendy's cut its dividend to $0.07 and expects no buybacks in 2026. Jack in the Box is paying down debt and has closed 40 restaurants this year. Only Restaurant Brands and Yum show technology as a quantified line.
What They're Shipping
Deployments scaled or launched at several companies in one month. Taco Bell's voice AI is now in more than 900 US restaurants, Yum says. Kiosks are in about two-thirds of Yum's restaurants. Domino's, the pizza chain, paid customers $5 off to beta test its redesigned website and app from August 3 to 30. Herbalife, the nutrition direct seller, launched Bioniq GO, a personalized nutrition line with 40 formulas, on August 5. Nu Skin is rolling out its Prysm iO wellness platform. One caution: testing cited by The Next Web found staff still step in on about 30% of Taco Bell AI orders. Products are shipping faster than the technology is finishing.
How Fast
Response timing still averages 6 to 9 months at the franchisor level. Central platforms move at franchisor speed: Taco Bell's voice AI took about three years to go from a 2023 pilot with Omilia to its current footprint. The biggest turnaround moved slower. Wendy's pushed its full turnaround plan out a quarter on August 7. Papa Johns' Gemini-powered ordering agent, announced in January, still targets a systemwide rollout by the end of 2026. Deals can move faster: Regent's Avon purchase was announced August 24 and is expected to close September 1. Oscar AI claims a 30-day deployment at the franchisee level.
