Six observable signals of change · Change Score: 58

Demand did not unwind after the World Cup, and this signal rose. US hotel revenue per available room, the standard measure of hotel sales, rose 8.2% in July, according to a Barclays analysis reported by Asian Hospitality on August 24. The week of August 2 to 8 brought an 18th straight weekly gain, up 7.2%, per STR and CoStar, the hotel data firms. CoStar and Tourism Economics raised their 2026 forecast to 4.4% growth from 2.8% after a record first half. Airbnb said nights booked rose 10% to 148.3 million. The soft spots are abroad. Booking, the largest online travel agency, guided third-quarter room nights up only 3% to 5%, citing Middle East flight capacity.
Talent 3
Hilton's reorganization of its business sales team added headcount rather than cutting it, its sales chief told Skift, per the law firm Foster Garvey on August 19. The pressure came from the labor side. A Seattle hotel workers' strike reached two months on August 21, and 1,350 workers at Encore Boston Harbor voted August 27 to authorize a strike. The union representing 47,000 TSA screeners sued over a privatization program in early August. Holland & Knight, a law firm, reported that immigration inspections of restaurants ran about 10 times the 2024 rate in early 2025.
Money 3
Airbnb reported net income of $816 million, up from $642 million a year earlier, and its shares jumped 16% to a four-year high on August 7, Mint reported. Expedia's operating income rose 65% to $800 million. Booking earned $2.65 billion in adjusted EBITDA, a 36% margin. Marriott reported a record pipeline of about 629,000 rooms on August 3, and Hyatt's pipeline grew 10% to about 154,000 rooms.
Incentives 2
The House inquiry into AI airfare pricing gave eight airlines until August 25 to answer, and its letters also asked about tariff-related pricing. TSA scrapped its Gold+ privatized screening program on August 24 after only three airports showed interest and Tampa then opted out, Forbes reported. Immigration enforcement on restaurant kitchens keeps building, per Holland & Knight. None of this changes how a room is priced or sold today.
Culture 4
The House Energy and Commerce Committee sent letters to eight US airlines on August 11, the law firm DLA Piper reported. The letters ask whether AI sets individual fares and whether customers are segmented by income, race, or age. The inquiry began with 25 companies in May, so airlines are the second wave. At the same time, autonomy is being sold as an amenity. Waymo, the robotaxi company, signed the Las Vegas Raiders on August 13 for a dedicated pickup zone at Allegiant Stadium.
Disruption 5
The platform shift last month's paragraph was watching for arrived, and this signal rose. Google confirmed a limited US test that completes hotel bookings inside AI Mode in Search, Hotel Technology News reported August 26. Booking Holdings, Expedia, Marriott, Wyndham, and IHG are working with it. Google Maps added agentic hotel availability checks and restaurant ordering on August 6. Delta says its baggage AI cut the mishandled-bag rate in Atlanta by more than 25% this year. Airbnb credited AI-driven product improvements for part of its booking growth. The discovery layer and the booking layer are merging at Google.
Company response · Response Score: 53
What They're Saying vs. Doing
Earnings calls tied AI claims to reported results, and this indicator rose. Airbnb said on August 6 that AI-driven product improvements lifted engagement, and delivered revenue of $3.61 billion, up 17%, with a second full-year raise. Booking's chief executive said on August 4 that his company is among the first participants in Google's agentic booking test. Expedia called AI a force multiplier and raised its 2026 revenue guidance to $16.05 to $16.22 billion. Marriott raised its full-year outlook on August 3 but guided third-quarter earnings below consensus. Delta CEO Ed Bastian said on an August 19 podcast that AI could lift the airline's operating margin from 10% to 15% over several years.
Who They're Hiring
Choice Hotels put its Chief Data, AI, and Technology Officer, Anna Scozzafava, in front of its Google partnership on August 28. That is one major franchisor with a combined data and AI seat at the top. Hilton reorganized its business sales team around three tiers of customer, self-serve digital, digital plus a voice channel, and person-to-person, and grew the team while doing it. One named executive and one reorganization do not change the picture. The wage structure still limits the industry's ability to hire top AI talent directly.
Where Capital Is Going
Capital still goes to development and buybacks, so this indicator held. Marriott's pipeline of about 629,000 rooms is 44% under construction. IHG raised its interim dividend to $0.645 a share on August 11, and Hyatt has returned $175 million to shareholders this year. Expedia spent $200 million on buybacks in the quarter. AI spending is real but unquantified. Delta is applying AI across reservations, maintenance planning, crew scheduling, and baggage, but has not published a dollar figure. No hotel company has either. The digital investment that COVID forced is still paying off, and the money now flows to rooms and shares.
What They're Shipping
Product shipping stays at the top of the scale, and August sustained it with a new channel rather than a new tool. Choice Hotels went live inside Google's AI Mode hotel booking on August 28, with Choice Privileges loyalty points shown in the results. Hilton for Business, the chain's small-business program, passed 400,000 enrolled companies, and a direct connection to Navan, the corporate travel platform, is live. Delta disclosed results from its baggage AI, which it says cut mishandled bags in Atlanta by more than 25% this year. Neither Marriott nor IHG shipped a new AI tool of its own in August; both plugged into Google's instead.
How Fast
Response timing still averages 3 to 5 months, faster than most industries. The forecast revisions came within a month of the July 19 World Cup final. Marriott moved on August 3, CoStar and Tourism Economics and Host Hotels on August 6, and Park Hotels on August 7. The Google booking test surfaced on Booking's August 4 call and had a named hotel partner live by August 28, about three weeks. Regulators moved fast too: airlines got 14 days to answer the House inquiry, and TSA reversed its screening program within three months of launch. The change muscle built during COVID still works.
