Six observable signals of change · Change Score: 79
Customers 5
The consumer pulled back and shifted at once. US retail sales fell 0.6% in July, the first monthly drop in nine months, the Commerce Department reported on August 14. Walmart said on August 20 that its US comparable sales grew 2.6%, the slowest pace in six years, while customers using its Sparky AI assistant were up 70%. An NMI survey of 1,000 US adults published August 26 found that only 11% have used AI to complete a purchase. 70% want the ability to review or override what AI does. People use AI to decide what to buy, not yet to buy it.
Talent 4
Target hired Chandhu Nair, previously head of data and AI innovation at Lowe's, as its first chief AI officer on August 11, Dow Jones reported. Adweek reported that Kroger, the grocery chain, made an AI hire the same week. Walmart filed layoff notices in California covering 88 employees in San Bruno and dozens more at its Sunnyvale tech sites, according to IBTimes. Amazon has removed more than 30,000 corporate roles since October 2025.
Money 5
A record wave of cash hit the sector. Customs and Border Protection had paid out $106.6 billion in tariff refunds as of August 21 after the Supreme Court's IEEPA ruling, Supply Chain Dive reported. Walmart received $2.9 billion, Target $994 million, Home Depot $730 million, and Lowe's $80 million. Corporate profits rose about $400 billion from the first quarter to the second on an annual basis, one of the largest jumps on record, Investopedia reported. Target says it is investing about $6 billion this year with AI at the core.
Incentives 2
Government action reached retail balance sheets this month, but not as AI policy. The tariff refunds came from a court ruling, a one-time event, not a standing incentive. Gap, the apparel retailer said on August 27 that it also adjusted its outlook for the July Section 301 tariff announcement. Colorado's proposed automated decision rules, filed August 11, name financial services and housing as covered areas; retail is not on the list. Walmart cited federal drug price negotiation as a 0.8-point drag on comparable sales. No federal rule pushes retailers toward AI; the platforms still supply the incentives. at the low end of the scale.
Culture 5
Shoppers want help, not a handover. NMI chief product officer Tiffany Johnson summed up her company's survey: the industry is designing for autonomy while consumers still ask for assistance. Parents and younger shoppers were the most enthusiastic about AI shopping. A second fault line opened over money. NPR and Modern Retail both ran stories on why businesses get tariff refunds while shoppers do not. Costco is fighting a customer lawsuit seeking member refunds, Yahoo Finance reported. Season creep continued, with pumpkin spice demand spiking two weeks earlier than in 2021, according to the New York Post. Sentiment stayed volatile but not different from July.
Disruption 5
OpenAI pinned a Shopping tab to ChatGPT's sidebar on August 27, Search Engine Roundtable reported. On Amazon, a Marketplace Pulse analysis found that 63.9% of the products its AI assistant recommends sit outside the top 10 organic results. A third shelf now exists that shoppers cannot see in search. Shopify said on August 5 that AI-referred traffic and orders tripled year over year. Etsy said on August 6 that AI-agent traffic is still under 1% of its total but converts at a higher rate. Albertsons, the grocery chain says AI search lifts baskets 10% on simple queries and 26% on complex ones.
Company response · Response Score: 43
What They're Saying vs. Doing
Walmart CEO John Furner told investors on August 20 that AI will improve nearly every part of the business. He backed it with a number: Sparky shoppers spend 40% more per order. Target reported comparable sales up 3.8% and digital sales up 8.7% on August 19, but its release carried no AI figures. On the product side, PepsiCo launched a global agency review focused on AI-driven marketing, exchange4media reported. Reuters reported Nestle is developing AI-powered nutrition products for people on GLP-1 drugs. No P&G AI statement appeared.
Who They're Hiring
The August edition watched for dedicated AI roles beyond headquarters. Target answered halfway: it named Chandhu Nair its first chief AI officer on August 11 and Purvi Shah its senior vice president of user experience, both headquarters jobs. No store-level AI roles appeared. Kroger made an AI hire the same week, Adweek reported. At the same time, Walmart filed layoff notices at its San Bruno and Sunnyvale tech sites, according to IBTimes. Retail is adding AI leaders at the top while trimming the tech teams beneath them.
Where Capital Is Going
Refund cash went three ways. Walmart CFO John Rainey said substantially all of its $2.9 billion in tariff refunds is going into prices and customer experience. Home Depot and Lowe's are using their refunds to offset higher costs rather than cut prices, Supply Chain Dive reported. Target is the exception that named AI: about $6 billion of investment this year with AI at the center, including a tool it calls Trend Brain. Albertsons says its ACI Edge program targets about $200 million in savings this year and next, built around enterprise AI. Only two retailers tied a dollar figure to AI.
What They're Shipping
The pipes kept going in, mostly from the same builders. Walmart is testing Sponsored Prompt ads inside its Sparky assistant and lets ChatGPT users buy Walmart products through its OpenAI partnership. Target lists purchase partnerships with ChatGPT and Gemini. Albertsons is folding its Ask AI, Plan AI, and Buy AI tools into one. DoorDash said on August 5 that its Ask tool builds a grocery cart in under two minutes. ChatGPT can now sign into sites and complete tasks without seeing the user's login details, Mashable reported on August 26. A lot shipped, but no new group of retailers joined the agent platforms.
How Fast
Walmart launched Sparky in June 2025, and 14 months later it reported users up 70% with a measured lift in spending. Etsy, the online marketplace said AI-agent traffic is still under 1% of its total, more than a year after the agent platforms launched. Albertsons said baskets grew as soon as its AI tools rolled out, but the return on investment was not immediate. Target hired its chief AI officer on August 11, eight days before earnings. Mid-market news this month, from Kohl's to Gap, was about margins and refunds, not AI speed.
